Today is the day we celebrate one of our favorite precuts: 2 ½-inch strips, or as Moda Fabrics has trademarked and coined the commonly used term, “Jelly Rolls”. They go by many names that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, such as Design Rolls from FreeSpirit Fabrics, Island Strips by Island Batik, Bali Pops from Hoffman Fabrics, Strip-pies from Benartex, Tonga Treats from Timeless Treasures, but 2 ½-inch strips no matter how they are referred to are a fun option for a fast and fresh quilt.
At Keepsake Quilting, we cut our own precuts in-house at our facilities in North Carolina. Our careful production staff takes pride in providing quilters with wonderful and diverse collections in a variety of sizes.
Here are a few tips for shopping and creating with 2 ½-inch strips:
Look closely. When purchasing a 2 ½-inch strip collection, we recommend checking how many strips are in each roll as this also may vary. The number of strips may also depend on the fabric line and manufacturer as some lines have fewer prints and some companies provide two of each print.
What can I make with 2 ½-inch strips? The options are endless. From the popular tutorial, the Jelly Roll Race, to Jelly Roll Rugs and more, there’s no shortage of patterns and books on working with this versatile precut.
What do I need to make a Jelly Roll Rug? There are a variety of patterns to create Jelly Roll Rugs by RJ Designs. To get started, we HIGHLY recommend using a denim needle and precut batting strips available here. These fun rugs are addictive and make beautiful decor.
